Airport and Shuttle Information
If you are flying to the Pasadena/Los Angeles area, the nearest airports
are Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Bob Hope/Burbank Airport
(BUR), and Ontario International (ONT). LAX offers more flight options,
but Burbank is closer and more convenient. Ontario is further from the
campus than Burbank or LAX, but may be more convenient than LAX.
To get
to the Caltech campus from the airport: Caltech has negotiated a discounted
rate with Super Shuttle, and there is a specific shuttle stop (S4) that
drops you off at the Arms Circle on California Blvd., #25 on a Caltech
map. To learn more about Super Shuttle and to arrange transportation,
please visit the Super Shuttle web site at www.supershuttle.com.

Unless you have made other arrangements with the Housing
Office, non-Caltech students may move into campus housing beginning
at 4:30 pm on Monday, June 11. Orientation activities begin at 2:00
pm, so those arriving in the morning or early afternoon may store their
luggage in the Student-Faculty Programs office until check-in time at
4:30 pm. After Orientation,
you will need to check in at the Housing Office (building 86 on a campus
map). They will give you information about your housing assignment and
give you directions to your room.
If you arrive before 2:00 pm, please check in at the Student-Faculty
Programs Office, room 08 in the Parsons-Gates building (#31). Along with
storing your luggage, we will help you complete your I-9 form (if you
are being paid via the Caltech payroll system) and answer any questions
you may have. We will also direct you to the Card Office in the Caltech
Bookstore (#51) where you can get your photo ID card. There will be a
lot of students getting cards on that day, so please be patient. It is
especially important for students working at JPL to get their cards on
Monday, June 11, because the bus schedule to and from JPL will make it
difficult for you to get to the Card Office during business hours on another
day.
Unless you have made arrangements with your mentor, you should plan to use
your time on Monday to settle into your room and take care of administrative
details, so that you can start your project on Tuesday.
Orientation for all students in all SFP programs will be held the afternoon
of Monday, June 11. Here is a schedule of activities:
2:00 - 2:30 pm - Check-in and Registration (outdoors, on
the south side
of Baxter, building 77)
2:30 - 4:00 pm - SFP Orientation (Baxter Lecture Hall, enter
on south side of Baxter)
4:00 - 4:30 pm - Meeting with your SURF Student Advisory
Council (SURFSAC) group (various locations)
4:30 - 6:00 pm – Check-in with the Housing office
and move in. I-9 Form completion in the Student-Faculty
Programs Office (08 Parsons-Gates, #31 on the campus
map)
Campus tours (optional)
6:00 pm - Barbecue for students and mentors (Glanville Courtyard,
Beckman Institute)
Students working at Caltech:
Students doing their research at Caltech will begin their projects on
Tuesday morning, June 12, unless they have made other arrangements with
their mentors.
Mandatory Safety Meeting: Tuesday, June 12, 1:30 PM in Baxter
Lecture Hall (#77)
Students working at JPL:
7:15 AM, Tuesday, June 12: Meet at the corner of San Pasqual Street and
Holliston Avenue. Buses will take JPL students to the Lab for orientation
activities, safety training, and lunch. (Note: You must have photo ID
to enter the bus.)
You will meet your mentor and begin your project on Tuesday
afternoon. You will be issued a temporary badge upon arrival. In order
to receive your permanent badge, you are required to provide
proof of citizenship.
All Non-Caltech Students:
Special Orientation Session: Thursday, June 14, 6:00 – 9:00 PM.
Dinner will be provided. This meeting will introduce you to Caltech and
Pasadena and will provide important information to help make your stay
on the campus comfortable and enjoyable.
Students whose fellowship is being paid through the Caltech payroll system:
First payday will be Monday, July 2. Please keep this in mind when deciding
how much money to bring with you.
Non-Caltech students may use the following address for mail and small
packages over the summer:
(your name), SFP Student
California Institute of Technology
Mail Code 08-31
Pasadena, CA 91125
If you have not yet secured health insurance that covers you for the duration
of your stay at Caltech, please remember to do so and to provide us with
the Health Insurance Verification form. **You will not be allowed to
begin your project until this insurance is in place.**
