Students who apply for a SURF fellowship with a mentor at another institution (but not JPL) are required to have an Associate Mentor.
Who May Serve as an Associate Mentor?
All Caltech faculty members including research, teaching, and visiting faculty, the professional staff, faculty associates, and members of the JPL technical staff may serve as Associate Mentors.
The Role of a SURF Associate Mentor
Associate Mentors
- Should review the student's research proposal
- Submit an online evaluation form as part of the student's application (associate mentors will be prompted by SFP online when they should complete the evaluation form)
- Read and approve the student's progress reports
- Read and approve the final technical report
The Associate Mentor does not have any financial responsibility for the student's stipend or research costs.
